LAST LIGHTS - THERE’S NO ONE GOOD ENOUGH TO BE ALONE

Last Lights was a band from Massachusettes that I found out about in 2007 through a post their singer made on the bridge9 messageboard after recently forming. They had a lot of potential for just a band with just a handfull of songs. A year after forming they (re)released their demo as a self-titled 7”.

Last Lights were quick to form a buzz, noted mostly from the intense live show and the no-frills attitude of the band. Up and coming indepenedent label Mighter Than Sword released the self-titled 7” debut in August 2008, mererly a year since the band had formed… Dominic Mallary, the band’s vocalist and frontman, passed away on December 5th, 2008 due to complications with his performance the previous day in Boston.

Their discography was recently released by Mightier than Sword Records, and Think Fast Records. All profits go to Dom’s family.

the good life is starving to death

the smokestacks are all out of breath

and my head’s hanging by a thread

while the poor play “war!” for the living dead

but I’m not on my own

there’s no one good enough to be alone

the underground is caving in

the kids are choking on their own spit

my generation was born controlled

hope I die before I get sold

but I’m not on my own

there’s no one good enough to be alone

I’m not on my own

but I keep trying and trying to live over this life

with no guide by my side

just this heart counting down out of time … .

this song’s for the shipwrecked

(Lord knows I’ve been wet)

for all the kids waiting to be born

in broken homes full of empty beds

there’s no one good enough to be alone

if love be true …

(you and you and you and you and you etc.)

“Our lives are mere flashes of light in an infinitely empty universe. In 12 years of education the most important lesson I have learned is that what we see as ‘normal’ living is truly a travesty of our potential. In a society so governed by superficiality, appearances, and petty economics, dreams are more real than anything in ‘the real world’. Refuse normalcy. Beauty is everywhere, love is endless, and joy bleeds from our everyday existence. Embrace it. I love all of you, all my friends, family, and community. I am ceaselessly grateful from the bottom of my heart for everyone. The only thing I can ask of you is to stay free of materialism. Remember that every day contains a universe of potential; exhaust it. Live and love so intensely that when death comes there is nothing left for him to take. Wealth is love, music, sports, learning, family, and freedom. Above all, stay gold.”

- Dominic Owen Mallary (1984-2008)
